The Thaipooya Mahotsavam, a one-day festival dedicated to Lord Subramanya (the son of Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi) is celebrated in the temples dedicated to Lord Sree Subramanya. The festival at Sree Subramanya Temple at Harippad is famous. On the festival day, dancing devotees carry kavadis - richly decorated wooden arches of different shapes and sizes - on their shoulders in a ceremonious procession to the temple. This ritual dance is called Kavadiyattom.
